There will be pizza and sodas at the school for lunch from noon to 1:00 for all volunteers!!!
Course marshals ("corner" and "finish")

Please read all the info on how to flag traffic, look at the pictures on how to flag traffic, take the VDOT test and check out your specific corner assignment. You will get your stop/slow paddle and vest at Walton School form the volunteer coordinator. You will need to get yourself and a rather large stop sign out to your corner from the school. If you will need a ride to your corner, please arrange this ahead of time. Please try to carpool with the other marshals on your corner (for corners 2 and 3). You should report to Walton School by 8:15 for the 9 AM session, 12:15 PM for the afternoon session.

If you are assigned as "finish", only one of you will be stopping the oncoming traffic to prevent head on collisions at the sprint finish. The rest of the finish people need to patrol the finish area to keep the fans from getting in the road and also get the cyclists off the road after they finish. We need to keep the general circus out of the road! Also, you will need to keep people from getting into their cars and driving backwards (i.e. into the oncoming race) to get back to the school.

Wheel Vehicles/Break Vehicles
You will need to arrive by 8:15 for the AM session, 12:15 AM for the afternoon session.  Please report to the lower parking lot at Walton School (the lot closest to 708). (Diagram of caravan line-up). You will be carrying spare wheels for the teams/racers in your specific race. When you get the wheels from the racers, be sure that the racers have marked their wheels so they can be identified during or after the race. Wheel vehicles will always follow behind the largest group of riders (NOT behind the last rider in the pack)- see the diagram of the caravan with race in progress. Only pass the riders who have come off the back of the group when it is safe to do so and when there is a big enough gap between the main pack and the single or small groups behind. Break vehicles will either follow the lead car or take the position in front of the police motorcycle and if a breakaway develops, the breakaway riders will be instructed to pass the police and your car. Then you will follow behind the breakaway riders. If the break is caught the motorcycle ref will tell you to pass the breakaway riders and stay in front of the police motor. When a rider needs a spare wheel, they should pull off on the right shoulder of the road. Please pull off BEHIND the rider on the right side of the road in order to get them a wheel. Do not try to find their specific wheel, just give them the first one you can get to that will work for them (unless they are not interested in trying to get back in the group, then you can take your time and find their specific wheel.) In order to facilitate the quick exchange of wheels, set up the wheels in such a way that you have separated the front and rear wheels and also any "special" rear wheels (e.g. ten speed, campy, etc.). Don't take every wheel you get but just a reasonable number such that you'll be able to have enough to last the race without having so many you won't be able to get one out in a hurry. You need to let the riders know that their wheels are "neutral" since it is not possible to carry wheels for everyone. If you give out a wheel during the race, please have some note pad where you can write down what the rider number is that gets a wheel. At the end of the race, you will not make the last left turn but instead turn right at the route 20 intersection and please return to the school with any wheels that haven't been claimed. The idea is to keep extra vehicles out of the congested start/finish area. Unload any unclaimed wheels onto the grass in front of the school. Please be aware of the no parking lane in front of the school (there is a painted line on the curb for no parking at the school) so don't leave your vehicle parked there after you have unloaded wheels..

Registration

9 AM session should arrive at Walton School at 7:15 AM. afternoon session should arrive at Walton School by 11:00 AM (be aware that races will be lining up and leaving at 9 am).

Most of the racers are pre-registered. The numbers and forms will be in both alphabetical and numerical order. There will be a number stapled to the standard release form that is already filled out and just needs the racer's signature. Please check the racer's USCF license-look for racer's category (has to match the category they are racing) for road races. The license should have a 2007 in upper right corner. Also check that the team name matches what they have on their registration. Please also remind the racers not to drive opposite the race direction on the course while races are still in session.

If the racers need to buy a license, Susie Segeleon will be in charge of that. Race day registration will be $35, checks payable to MVC.
