Map 01: Avoid Peacock Hill 32 miles
Beautiful countryside with a few rolling hills (ha!- at least you don't have to climb Peacock Hill:-) Click on map for lengthy ride description. Cue sheet: • From the intersection of 250 and Old Ivy Rd bear RIGHT onto Old Ivy Rd, go immediately under the old railroad bridge and follow Old Ivy Rd for about 1 mile to the 250 bypass/Old Ivy Rd intersection. Go STRAIGHT across to Old Garth Rd.2. • Follow Old Garth Rd for 2 miles to a T intersection with Garth Rd (601). Turn LEFT on Garth Rd. • Follow Garth Rd for 2.7 miles to intersection with Free Union Rd. (Hunt Country Store). Stay STRAIGHT on Garth road for another 1 mile to a LEFT on Owensville Rd. • Follow Owensville Rd for 4.25 miles to a RIGHT on US route 250. • After 0.1 mile (a few hundred yards) turn RIGHT on Ivy Depot Rd. • After 0.14 mile turn LEFT on Ivy Depot Rd. • After 0.33 miles Ivy Depot Rd becomes Dick Woods Rd (637) – stay STRAIGHT. • Follow Dick Woods Rd for another 1.6 miles to the I-64 interchange. • Continue STRAIGHT on Dick Woods Rd for another 1.86 miles to a LEFT on Taylors Gap Rd (708). • Continue on Taylors Gap 2.7 miles to a LEFT on Red Hill Rd (708). • Follow Red Hill Rd for 1.9 miles to US route 29. • Cross 29 and continue STRAIGHT on Red Hill Rd for 1.9 miles to a LEFT on Dudley Mountain Rd (706). • Follow Dudley Mountain Rd for 3.7 miles to a LEFT on Old Lynchburg Rd (631). • Follow old Lynchburg Rd for 2.3 miles to either a LEFT on Old Lynchburg Rd to return to the UVa area or continue STRAIGHT back to downtown. -
North Garden "The Fruitstand"
Low traffic volumes but fairly hilly. Some amazing relatively undeveloped countryside. Click on map for detailed ride description. Cue sheet: • From the intersection of Old Lynchburg Rd and 5th St go 2.4 miles to a RIGHT on Dudley Mountain Rd (706). • Follow Dudley Mountain Rd for 3.7 miles to a RIGHT on Red Hill Rd (708). • Continue STRAIGHT on Red Hill Rd for 1.9 miles to route 29. • Cross 29 and continue STRAIGHT on Red Hill Rd. for 1.9 miles to a LEFT on Taylors Gap Rd (710). • Follow Taylors Gap Rd for 1 mile down a big hill to a RIGHT on Edge Valley Rd. • Edge Valley Rd for 2.7 miles to a T intersection - LEFT on Plank Rd (708). • Plank Rd for 2 miles to the intersection with route 29. • STRAIGHT across route 29 at Crossroads to continue on Plank Rd. • Plank Rd. for 4.44 miles to a LEFT on Old Lynchburg Rd (631). • Stay on Old Lynchburg Rd for 3.12 miles to the intersection with Red Hill Rd (708). Stay STRAIGHT on Old Lynchburg Rd for another 6.3 miles. • Either turn LEFT on Old Lynchburg Rd to return to the UVA area or go STRAIGHT on 5th St Extended to return downtown. -
Monticello Loop
Over Monticello Mountain either by the trail or route 53, then back via the Kluge estates and Old Lynchburg Rd. Click on the map fro a detailed ride description. Cue sheet: 1. From route 20 turn LEFT on route 53 (stoplight). 2. Go over Monticello either on the Saunders Monticello trail (http://www.monticello.org/parkway/trail.html) by turning right into the parking lot off 53 and following Saunders Trail signs or continuing straight on 53. 3. If you take Sanders trail turn right at the stone bridge at the top to come back to 53. Then turn RIGHT on 53 to continue the ride. 4. From the 53/20 intersection go 3 miles to Simeon. Turn RT to stay on 53. 5. After .25 miles on 53 turn RIGHT onto the James Monroe Parkway (route 795, Y intersection). 6. In 2.6 miles go STRAIGHT on Carters Mountain Rd (route 607, intersection with Rolling Rd). 7. Follow Carters Mountain Rd for 5.5 miles to a T intersection with route 20. Turn RIGHT on 20. 8. CAUTION on route 20 – heavy traffic- follow 20 for 0.85 miles. Turn LEFT on Taylors Gap Rd (708) towards Walton Middle School. 9. Follow 708 gradually, then steeply uphill for 2.8 miles. Turn RIGHT on Old Lynchburg RD (631). 10. Follow 631 for 6.25 miles to the County Offices (on the right). To return to UVA turn LEFT onto Old Lynchburg Rd. and return via the SOUTH route. To return downtown follow 631 straight for 2.8 miles as it becomes Fifth St extended, then 5th St and then Ridge St to the intersection with McIntire Rd/Water St/South St/West Main St. -
Scottsville "60 at 6"
Metric century ride to Scottsville via Monticello and back via Topscott and Esmont. Detailed ride description coming soon. Cue sheet: 1. From route 20 turn LEFT on route 53 (stoplight) (skip to step 4 if not taking the Saunders trail). 2. Go over Monticello either on the Saunders Monticello trail (http://www.monticello.org/parkway/trail.html) by turning right into the parking lot off 53 and following Saunders Trail signs or continuing straight on 53. 3. If you take Sanders trail turn right at the stone bridge at the top to come back to 53. Then turn RIGHT on 53 to continue the ride. 4. From the 53/20 intersection go 3 miles to Simeon. Turn RIGHT to stay on 53. 5. After .25 miles on 53 turn RIGHT onto the James Monroe Parkway (route 795, Y intersection). 6. In 2.6 miles go LEFT on Rolling Rd (795/620). 7. Follow Rolling Rd for 5 miles to Woodridge- a 5 way intersection. Stay STRAIGHT on Rolling Rd by following the main road and watching for signs (see Woodridge blow up). 8. Follow Rolling Rd for another 8.8 miles to Kidds Store, a T intersection with route 6. Turn RIGHT on route 6. 9. Follow route 6 for 8.5 miles to the town of Scottsville (sharp RIGHT bend at the bottom of the hill where route 6 becomes Main St). 10. Follow Main St (route 6) for 0.5 mile to a RIGHT turn onto route 20 (Valley St). 11. Follow Valley St. for 0.2 miles to a LEFT on Warren St. 12. Climb steep hill on Warren St for 0.36 miles to top of hill and intersection with James River Rd. 13. Warren St ends- Stay STRAIGHT on James River Rd. 14. Follow James River Rd 2.9 miles to a T intersection. Turn RIGHT to stay on James River Rd. 15. Follow James River Rd another 1.5 miles to a bend in the road. Bear RIGHT to stay on James River Rd/Porters Rd. 16. Continue on James River Rd/Porters Rd for 1 mile to the intersection/stop sign with Langhorne Rd. 17. Continue STRAIGHT on James River Rd/Porters Rd for another 0.39 miles and turn RIGHT on Porters Rd. at Topscott just before Lone Oak Farm. 18. Follow Porters Rd for 3 miles to the intersection with route 6. (C-Store just down route 6 to your left if needed). 19. Go STRAIGHT across route 6 to continue on Porters Rd. 20. Follow Porters Rd 1.88 miles to intersection with Esmont Rd. Turn RIGHT on Esmont Rd. 21. Follow Esmont Rd 2.8 miles to Keene. Turn LEFT onto Plank Rd (712). 22. Follow Plank Rd for 5.7 miles to a RIGHT on Old Lynchburg Rd (631). 23. Stay on Old Lynchburg Rd for 3.12 miles to the intersection with Red Hill Rd (708). Stay STRAIGHT on Old Lynchburg Rd for another 6.3 miles. 24. Either turn LEFT on Old Lynchburg Rd to return to the UVA area or go STRAIGHT on 5th St Extended to return downtown.
